Stanley Melvin Berenstain (September 29, 1923 - November 26, 2005) and Janice Marian Berenstain (ne Grant; July 26, 1923 - February 24, 2012) were American writers and illustrators best known for creating the children's book series The Berenstain Bears . They became contributors to The Saturday Evening Post, McCalls and Collier's. Stan and Jan Berenstain published the first Berenstain Bears book in 1962, and the series has gone on to capture the hearts and minds of children across generations and across the globe.
